Every pianist has his favorite piano, on which playing he can bring out the most beautiful sound for him. But the pianists are not in such as comfortable situation as violinists or guitarists who can perform on the same instrument they practice on a daily basis.
Of course there are exceptions. Krystian Zimerman once traveled the famous pianomobile with his own piano. At present, he takes only the mechanism for the concerts, but it is the most important part of the piano.
Choosing the right piano is especially important when we practicing while preparing for a recording session. In June 2017 Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the 17th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2015) recorded a CD with Claude Debussy’s music. While working on the repertoire, he not only studied Impressionists painting, but also sought the right kind of sound by practicing on the C. Bechstein piano, which was a favorite instrument of the French composer. Claude Debussy once even said that "piano music should only be written for the Bechstein."
